Nothing demonstrates the need for elasticity and scale like the Holiday Season. Manufacturing, distribution, and eCommerce companies experience a huge spike in their business, but nobody feels the pressure more than the big guy up North. You know—the jolly fellow, red suit, white beard—ring a (jingle) bell? It’s Santa Claus!

Smart vs. Dumb Load Balancers | Expect More With Smart Load Balancing

We haven’t expected much from our load balancers in the past. And why should we? Traditional load balancers had a relatively simple job (e.g. distribute traffic, SSL, some content switching), and functioned relatively well. End of story.

F5 vs. Avi Networks: 9 Reasons Why Hardware Is Better Than Software

I originally joined Avi Networks because I believed they had a robust, software-defined application delivery solution. It could do everything F5 hardware load balancers could do… or so I thought. After one week on the job, I’ve realized that Avi Networks only cuts costs by up to 90% only because you aren’t paying for hardware—hardware that can do a lot of things that Avi Networks just can’t do. Let's take a look into hardware load balancers vs software load balancers.

Virtual Load Balancers | Hardware in a Software Disguise

When it comes to load balancers you have probably heard terms such as, "Software Defined Hardware" (yes, they actually said that!) or "Software First" from vendors like F5 Networks and Citrix NetScaler. What they are really telling you is that they understand the importance of software, but need to keep selling you hardware.

The drive for IT agility is everywhere; to the extent that the word of 2017 is “transformation.” Whatever you call it, I find it astounding how fast we are innovating. The adoption of “cloud-like” architectures and microservices is outpacing the impact of virtualization just a few years ago.

Your application owners expect network and performance issues to be quickly resolved so they can deliver their apps faster. Your networking team expects this perfectly elastic load balancer that can scale itself automatically to meet application traffic patterns. Your CIO wants to accomplish all of this, while lowering costs.

Ludicrous Scale | Elastic Load Balancing Put to the Test

Today, Avi Networks shared news of demonstrating unprecedented elasticity and scale with software-defined load balancers. The demo started as a pet project of our CTO, Ranga Rajagopalan. Ranga always knew that the software-defined architecture for Avi’s load balancers that he conceived and implemented with his fellow founders was highly scalable and elastic as verified by Avi’s performance testers. But, what would it take to put Avi through its paces beyond the QA lab?

In an earlier blog, “Avi Vantage: A Cloud-Scale Distributed Software Load Balancer For Everyone”, we had described the high-level architecture of the Avi Vantage platform. The platform consists of a clustered centralized Controller, a scale-out distributed Layer-7 Reverse Proxy data path called as Service Engine (SE), a Visibility/Analytics engine, a RESTful interface to the Controller that enables integration with external orchestration engines, and a fast and responsive HTML5 UI. It is designed ground up to be a modern cloud-scale Application Delivery Controller (ADC) that enables application deployment across any cloud - private, public, or hybrid.
